Stuck

This morning I got an email from the HR guy where I interviewed Monday. It said that he would like me to provide the references my resume says I would provide upon request.
I don’t have any idea who I’m going to put on that list. Maybe I’ll just bail.
How about Richard? And B?
That’s a pickle. When I was interviewing for my current job, I used a discreet coworker (who was also trying to get out) and an old boss as references. I told my old boss that I didn’t want my employer knowing that I was interviewing elsewhere. Good luck.
Richard from your most recent job.
An old co-worker or boss from a job before that? Good luck with this, Harlan.
I’ll give you a good reference.
Oh common!!! You’re telling me that you NEVER thought about references? They’re just a tad bit important. One of the first things I take care of when applying for job. Ughghgh…I don’t quite think you’ll find a job without them, so bailing is a pathetic cop-out. Get to work and find a few peeps (fake or real) who can help out.
I’ll do it. I’ll just say I worked in your department. Team player - worked a tad to much needs to balance personal life/work life a little better =) yada yada.. just email me the details I will send you my contact info.. . . unless you dont need a job?
I’ll be happy to help, too. Who wouldn’t want a reference named “Asshat”?
Bailing’s not a long term option. You’re a smaaaht guy, take advantage of these ideas or offers or come up with another ingenious scheme. It’s the job equivalent of appropriating pants from Walmart.
And, um, don’t forget to remove this posting from your blog if you ever share it with future co-workers.
What were the references you provided on your last job application? Just use those. Otherwise go with Richard, and maybe the people who run the Bloggies.
Most companies just verify employment dates and don’t give specific information. I don’t know why anyone bothers, it seems a waste of time. Get a third party to call and see what info they will provide.
Surely Richard will give you a good reference.
What about your manager at your old job? We all know what happened there, but can’t your old manager at least verify your employment? Nowdays, most former employers won’t do much more than that anyway. Besides that, you quit on them so they can’t say you were fired.
Food for thought: Being an IT guy anywhere is indentured servitude, but most other industries make it financially worth your while. Not so with banks. I’m sure not having a job sucks, but if I were you I’d be looking outside the financial sector.
Harlan, it sounds like you know what you’re doing at work. I’m sure your old boss must have noticed. I think the proper thing would be to contact him/her and ask if you can use them as a reference, and if the answer is yes, you can ask what kind of information they’d provide.
Don’t bail!! And even if it’s not the ideal job, you can either make money or go into more debt…if that’s even an option.
You must have a co-worker who felt neutral about things, who knew your work was good.
To me is sounds like you really don’t want this job, like you are settling for it out of necessity. Find a place to work that you will feel like you can fit in, and feel comfortable at, or you life will be hell.
Faux references…
That’s a new one.
